About this artwork
In 1901, the U.S. Senate’s McMillan Commission used this map of Washington, D.C., to recommend land for new parks. Green lines enclose certain areas, indicating future parkland. These greenspaces appear across the city alongside existing parks. The National Mall is also depicted, but the commission had more planned for that space, noting, “For Mall Text, See Larger Plan.” Map description by Allie Richmond (GWU, M.A. ‘26, Art History). Map of the District of Columbia Showing Public Reservations and Possession and Area Recommended to be Taken for New Parks, 1901. Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection, AS 2017.51.
